In 2008, the West Michigan Trails & Greenways Coalition negotiated the purchase of a portion of Rail America’s right-of-way which connected the Michigan cities of Greenville, Lowell, and Ionia. As a part of this acquisition, Williams & Works was chosen to perform a number of boundary surveys and develop legal descriptions of the railroad right-of-way to be conveyed.
The right-of-way crossed approximately fifty government sections in eight different townships of Kent, Ionia, and Montcalm counties.
Considerable research was done dealing with recorded plats, recorded deeds, and valuation maps from the railroad. This information was gathered and evaluated, along with the actual location of the physical improvements of the railroad right-of-way, in order to create an accurate metes and bounds legal description of the railroad right-of-way in each individual government section. These legal descriptions were then monumented in the field and mapped in accordance with P.A. 132 of 1970, as amended.
